I think that all golfers have, at some point in their careers, dreamed of hitting that McIlroy-esque high-drawing bomb; sure, we can all get one accidentally, but what if we need to be able to produce a lovely and consistent high draw regularly?
A high draw is a beautiful shot that starts low and curves high and right to left (for right-handed golfers). It’s a beauty to behold on a tee bed and will win you the jealousy of your golfing buddies.
If you can master this shot, it can be a powerful weapon in your arsenal. Fortunately, a simple 30-second tip can help you hit a high draw consistently. Here’s how to do it:
- 1. Position the Ball Forward in Your Stance
The first step is to position the ball forward in your stance.
For right-handed golfers, this means moving the ball slightly ahead of the center of your stance towards your left foot.
This will help you make contact with the ball before the clubhead reaches the bottom of the arc, which is essential for hitting a high draw.
- 2. Close Your Stance and Clubface
Next, close your stance and clubface slightly. This means aligning your feet and clubface slightly to the right of the target line. This will help you swing across the ball from the inside, which is necessary for hitting a high draw.
- 3. Swing on an Inside-Out Path
Finally, swing on an inside-out path. This means swinging the club from the inside, and will be aided by the changes you made in step 2.
The idea being that you will swing to the right of the target line, and then curving the ball back to the left. To do this, start your downswing by dropping your right shoulder and bringing your right elbow down and in towards your body.
This will help you swing on the correct path and create the right amount of spin to curve the ball.
Practice this 30-second tip on the driving range, and you’ll be hitting consistent high draws in no time. Remember to start with the ball forward in your stance, close your stance and clubface, and swing on an inside-out path….
If you have that as a swing thought in your practice, you will be able to get the ball moving just how you want it.
Hitting a consistent high draw is a valuable skill for any golfer to have. With this simple 30-second tip, you can master this shot and add it to your repertoire.
So, the next time you’re on the course and need to hit a high draw, remember to position the ball forward in your stance, close your stance and clubface, and swing on an inside-out path.
As with any of my tips, though, it’s a 30 second tip, but needs plenty of balls on the range to practice it. Give it a try and let me know how you go!
Happy golfing!
