Are you ready for this weekend’s game? Buddies all prepped? Beers in the cooler? As the weather warms up and the grass turns green, it’s time to dust off the clubs and hit the links. But before you tee off, make sure you’re not making these three common swing mistakes that could ruin your game, especially if you’ve spent the winter away from the course!

Do-Not-Do Swing Move #1: Over-Swinging

We’ve all heard the phrase “swing for the fences,” but when it comes to golf, less is often more. Over-swinging can throw off your balance and cause you to lose control of the ball. Instead, focus on a smooth, controlled swing that finishes in a natural position. This will help you hit the ball straight and avoid slicing or hooking. It’s so tempting after time off to try and knock the ball out of the proverbial stadium, but let’s try and keep that swing nice and cool!

Do-Not-Do Swing Move #2: Lifting Your Head

It’s tempting to peek up and watch your ball soar through the air, but lifting your head during your swing can be a big mistake. This can cause you to top the ball or hit it thin, resulting in a weak shot that doesn’t travel far. Keep your eyes on the ball throughout your swing, and only lift your head once you’ve made contact. “Keep your head down” is not perfect advice, and a real swing coach will get you to ignore that advice, it’s more about lifting the head up too early – the body will bring your head through at the right time. The best tip I’ve ever had for this, is to imagine there is a word written on the tee peg, below the ball, and you want to read it. That should, in theory, get your head in just the right place for the swing!

Do-Not-Do Swing Move #3: Rushing Your Swing

Golf is a game of patience, and rushing your swing is a surefire way to mess up your shot. Take a deep breath, relax, and take your time with each swing. I know that when I’ve had time off it’s so easy to loose a nice rhythm. If you can get into a good rhythm, it will help you maintain your tempo, resulting in a smoother, more consistent swing. Rushing your swing can also cause you to miss important details, like lining up your shot or checking the wind.

Now that you’re prepped for the comeback round, and are ready to avoid these three common swing mistakes, you’ll be well on your way to a successful weekend round. Over-swinging can cause you to lose control of the ball, lifting your head can result in weak shots, and rushing your swing can throw off your rhythm and tempo.

So, next time you hit the links, remember to take it easy and focus on a smooth, controlled swing. Keep your eyes on the ball and take your time with each shot. With a little patience and practice, you’ll be hitting the ball straight and far in no time.

Now it’s time to put these tips into action. Grab your clubs, head to the course, and enjoy your weekend round of golf.

So, get out there and swing away – just remember, less is often more in the game of golf!
